Coa Valley Rock Art Trip

Friday 26th April to Monday 29th April

£350 (£325 if booked by 15th Feb, or for concessions)

The Côa Valley is located close to the Spanish border in NE Portugal. Up until recently little was known of its ancient past. The landscape, dominated by the mighty Douro River has, since medieval times been taken up by the vine. However, the character of this landscape changed dramatically when the government of the day gave the go-ahead for a dam to be constructed across the Douro.

Prior to construction, archaeologists began to discover rock art, very early rock art which dated to around 25,000 cal. BC. The ensuring battle between corporate business and archaeology resulted in a section of the valley being designated a World Heritage Site. The rock art, now numbering over a thousand panels is one of Europe’s best kept archaeological secrets; why not come and join us and unlock the mysteries this small corner of Portugal has to offer.
